Housing Characteristics

Housing Characteristics is an interactive dashboard that provides visitors with Census data on the financial and structural characteristics of residential housing in Maine.

This data, used in conjunction with the Housing and Affordability Index, can provide the reader with some basic understanding of housing in the selected community, its affordability, and needs.

MaineHousing Affordability Indexes

MaineHousing’s affordability indexes provide a statewide, county, and local breakdown of home buying and rental affordability. The affordability calculation is based on the ratio of area median home prices and median two-bedroom rent costs to area median household and rental household incomes. A ratio of 1 or above indicates affordability.

  Please note that Rental Affordability Index data are not current. Our former vendor no longer provides this service, and we are in the process of redesigning the data collection methods for this index to better reflect current rental market conditions.  We hope to have an updated version available in the coming months.
